2024 Reviews (In progress)
And so it begins…again. Currently sharing on Twitter and Instagram.
1. #MyLifeWithTheWalterBoys - It started off well, then fell a bit into trope town a bit too much for me. It got cringey at some points and something about the lead actress and actor’s acting annoyed me a bit. All in all, it’s quite a basic, teenage love drama. 6/10 #TolsWatches
2. #WarWrathAndRevenge S1 - I love Nigerian series & when they bang, they bang. Didn’t realise this was an extension of #SonsOfTheCaliphate till halfway through (I need to go back and watch that). And not every day Yoruba drama. Sometimes Hausa . Bring on S2. 8/10 #TolsWatches
3. #Pluto - A top tier anime. My favourite robot was North No. 2. That whole section with him & the blind pianist was ART. My actual heart . The finale went a tad haywire, but in general an intriguing & compelling plot with some surprisingly emotional moments. 8/10 #TolsWatches
4. #TheTrustNetflix - Brah. This one started with bad vibes icl. And from my namesake and her Commander In Chief . The werey was wereying & it was annoying because a lot was just performative. It’d be better with less domineering people. Great watch but yeah. 8/10 #TolsWatches
5. #TheTraitorsUK S2 - It’s the day after the jaw-dropping night before. I won’t spoil it. I don’t need to write anything. If you don’t know this is IMPECCABLE TV, get off this planet. Earth doesn’t need you, but maybe Pluto does. £100,000/10 . I said what I said! #TolsWatches
6. #FoolMeOnce - I love a good Harlan Coben adaptation. Key word being “good”. This had sparks of potential initially, even a half decent plot, but welp…just like that it spiralled like a strand of afro hair; going vaguely in a concrete direction but tbc . 6/10 #TolsWatches
7. #TheBrothersSun - Omg. I LOVED this. Cinematic masterpiece. Action, comedy, emotion & a compelling storyline wrapped up like a fat burrito. You know when you start eating it & it just bursts everywhere in abandon? That. Soundtrack . Charles! . Watch it. 9/10 #TolsWatches
8. #RaisingKanan S3 - What a blinder. Kanan reminds me a lot of Tariq w/ slightly less insolence. Lou’s descent was painful, Marvin might be the kindest serial killer you know, and Raq is someone even the devil should fear. Juke got done DIRTY in the very end. 10/10 #TolsWatches
9. #TheAshleyMadisonAffair - This 3 part doc was a TRIP. A dating site for adulterers? The CEO was married? And the wife believed strongly in monogamy but was part of the business? An astonishing example of sleazy, utterly immoral & incomparable greed. Dazing! 8/10 #TolsWatches
10. #OneDayNetflix - Didn’t realise I’d watched the film till halfway in. Anyway…crying, screaming, throwing up, emotional damage, sit in the dark & think about what’s really important in life, typa content. 15th July will nevaa be the same. Impeccable acting. 10/10 #TolsWatches
11. #KenganAshura S1 - I took a chance on this, and it paid off. It grew on me slowly, but the depiction of the utter arrogance of the fighters, contrasted by Yamashita’s perpetual panic lmao, and the murky underworld of corporate fighting, is quite fun & witty. 8/10 #TolsWatches
12. #AvatarNetflix - I grew up on the cartoons & this was a solid adaptation. Some acting annoyed me at times - Katara’s is a bit too soft, and Aang was overacted a little. But Zuko was on point, as were all the fire nation characters. The SFX was decent. 7.5/10 #TolsWatches
13. #BloodAndWater S4 - Haibo this season doubled the darkness of the last. It was Euphoria-lite + a salt bae sprinkle of Grey’s Anatomy at its tragedy peak. Everybody moved mad, but Fikile I judged most. The social freedom these African kids had was crazy lol. 7/10 #TolsWatches
14. #LoveIsBlind S6 - A HELL of a season w/ unforgettable moments of sobering reality. Some low vibrational men are expected, as are some women who cant stand up, YET the casualties in S6 were flamboyant in their dissolution. Don’t get me started on my kinfolk! 10/10 #TolsWatches
15. #TheGentlemen - This was everything we love Guy Ritchie for. Top tier cinematography, witty playful banter, punctured with a yin yang blend of comedy & violence. Theo James never acted so good in his life and Kaya Scodelario was outstanding. It was giving. 10/10 #TolsWatches
16. #Anikulapo - The film was great. The series built on it & didn’t disappoint. Saro is a rascal with more lives than a cat. Yet I love how much airtime Arolake’s journey got and how all the ramifications of their thoughtless actions, played out in the end. 9/10 #TolsWatches
17. #BuyingBeverlyHills S2 - I like that they actually focus on stunning houses a lot. The tangible emotional turmoil for the Umanskys was quite heartbreaking. Highlights include Ben growing as a person & Michelle as a corporate female bitch stereotype . 7/10 #TolsWatches
18. #AttackOnTitan S4 - Finally made it to the end of this spectacle after how many years. Tbh I’m going to have to google what it meant because it really descended into barely intelligible chaos and stories within stories within worlds within worlds. Yeah… 7/10 #TolsWatches
19. #3BodyProblem - Loved this…9/10 until my colleague pointed out various potholes . Anyway it was sufficiently terrifying (it sits on that side of sci-fi), part gruesome, and explored the delicate line btwn desperation, faith, hope & destructive fanaticism. 7/10 #TolsWatches
20. #AfricanFolktalesReimagined - These are so good! They’re based on existent African folktales exploring toxic traditions, mysticism, sci-fi, taboos, etc, made contemporary by various African directors. Halima’s Choice was my favourite & Anyango was powerful. 8/10 #TolsWatches
21. #Boarders - Oh my days. Perfect, chaotic, brilliance. Very triggering if you attended a predominantly white “good” school. The microagressions were so well performed I wanted to beat up certain characters & a final boss level Karen (sorry but bad memories). 10/10 #TolsWatches
22. #BabyReindeer - An emotional rollercoaster my goodness. So many layers packed into this brilliant piece. EP4 was like a car suddenly slamming into you at an intersection. I couldn’t breathe. Richard Gadd acted his flipping life off. Er…trigger warning?? 10/10 #TolsWatches
23. #BadSurgeon - Nothing prepared me for the extreme alarm & devastation I’d feel finding out what this is about. What Paolo Macchiarini did was high evil & I pray his victims are in paradise. They suffered so much! May God repay his flagrant hubris & evil. 9/10 #TolsWatches
24. #KenganAshura S1 Part II - I think this is one of the strangest animes I’ve ever watched aside from Baki lol. I’m addicted to the fighter stats, predicting who will win, the surprise champions, and the absolutely bitter rivalries mixing violence & comedy. 8/10 #TolsWatches
25. #SellingTheOC S3 - Alex Hall & Tyler are still pathologically irritating, Sean is either a psychotic liar like Christine or Austin did that ish (I lean towards the latter), Gio’s arrogance is suffocating, and Kayla wasn’t playing games which I love for her. 7/10 #TolsWatches
26. #AManInFull - Jeff Daniels a fave since #TheNewsroom(iconic), played Charlie Croker the epitome of white male privilege, brilliantly. The tandem storyline of Conrad had my chest TIGHT, but Aml Ameen my Black British brudda - that’s my star! Amazing as Roger. 8/10 #TolsWatches
28. #Fallout - I’ve never played the game but I liked this whacky little sci-fi. It would just dip into the utterly bizarre every so often & I’d think, is this a slapstick comedy or a “We’re all gonna die or turn into zombies” scaremongering entertainment fr fr. 8/10 #TolsWatches
29. #BloodOfZeus S2 - Only took half a decade to come back but it was worth it. One of my top animated series based on Greek mythology & all the no good the gods got up to. I always thought to myself, how are these lot ruling man? They’re mad. You see all that. 9/10 #TolsWatches
30. #Heeramandi - Absolutely loved this. Everywhere you turned there was skullduggery, hopeless helpless love, savage power plays & Mallikajaan . Rebellion is the underlying theme - in life, love, family, politics & Heeramandi - all w/ tragic circumstances. 9/10 #TolsWatches
31. #TheUltimatumSA - Finished this whilst in SA which felt poetic. This went AWWF. The lies, truths, victimisations, the WAY the lines of loyalty blurred instantaneously…never seen the experience so enthusiastically adopted. And the fallout was galactic. 10/10 #TolsWatches
32. #Kin S1 - This is top quality Irish drama feat some of our fave actors from GOT and Daredevil. Eric is the liability of liabilities. His dumb & insecure actions trigger everything. And the threat of what Michael once was looms with anticipated chaos. 9/10 #TolsWatches
33. #XMen97 - Why on earth was this as profound as it was? Damn. Immediately I could see links to current real life social & world issues. Maybe this theme of moral right always ran through, but watching some parts of this as an adult was very emotional. EP6 . 8/10 #TolsWatches
34. #HouseOfNinjas - It took me a while to get into this, but once I did, it got very good…then it descended into random nonsense by the end imo lol. Great action[beautiful gowns] though. Riku is adorable. Would I watch a second season? Nah. 6.5/10 #TolsWatches
35. #Bridgerton S3 - An utter delight. Yet again a perfect distribution of yearning unrequited then requited love, the Queen’s hairdos & everlasting contempt, Lady Whistledown doing up Shadeborough, a sprinkle of gender politics…just what the doctor ordered. 9/10 #TolsWatches
36. #QuietOnSet - A SAD doc. Egregious are the evils many child actors were subjected to by adults. Sets were a den of predators, zero safeguarding. I commend Drake Bell’s strength to reveal his devastating experience. Worst…I don’t think much has changed. 9/10 #TolsWatches
37. #PerfectMatch S2 - Mad season. I found Harry to be a very emotionally manipulative person expert in therapy & healing speech but still willingly operating in damaging ways. Jess was consciously blind & that was irritating. Also how did that couple win? Lmao. 8/10 #TolsWatches
38. #Shogun - Snobby imperialists wanting to run things is a familiar story, but as the background to power struggles betwn the country’s most powerful men, the unlikely alliances & relationships this forms, & deadly devotion to honour, makes this a great watch. 7/10 #TolsWatches
39. #Supacell - I hated so many aspects of the first episode truth be told, but as the plot started to take hold, I now love this show as an original & compelling story in the sci-fi genre, with many moments of brilliance & throughly great acting. Binged it. 8.5/10 #TolsWatches
40. #TheChi S6 - Dunno how this show has made it so long but this season stood on bidness. Douda is everyone’s boogie man STILL, quite a few characters we wanted the best for evolve backwards, the kids wont be alright, & the finale contained diabolical activity. 8/10 #TolsWatches
41. #TheBear S3 - You can’t pit this show’s seasons against each other. They’re dynamically & intricately intertwined. Highlights include Carmy still being somewhat unhinged, Sugar’s conflicts, Tina finding purpose, & Sydney struggling with her place in it all. 8/10 #TolsWatches
42. #Kin S2 - Tremendous. S1 on crack cocaine. Brendan is an absolute demon & his involvement in everything makes the events that occur so tense & anxiety-inducing as a viewer, you barely breathe. He is a whirlwind of evil, and the finale went all the way AWFF. 10/10 #TolsWatches
43. #TheManWith1000Kids - Procreating with wanton abandon like this is predatory & revolting. I pray God protects those kids from the nightmare they’ve been born into. Wider laws are needed urgently around sperm donation. I’ve always been on the fence re it. 8/10 #TolsWatches
44. #FiveStarChef - I love a good chef-off. Every finalist was highly talented and the best TV was in their crises of confidence, meltdowns, delusions of grandeur & decisive hubris. I actually respected the panel - they didn’t yap on for TV sensation sake. 8/10 #TolsWatches
45. #TheBoys S4 - A rambling & meandering season, with the gore & flirtation with the weird & deviant so gratuitous at times, it felt like I was in the dark web. I’ll have to bleach my brain of some things. Cheap shock factors over well built and paced plot. 6/10 #TolsWatches
46. #Ripley - If Nigerian aunties ever watched this they’d scream in validation for all of the warnings they’ve ever given you about friends & evil eye. The end credits wouldve rolled into a 30min lecture. This brudda moved DARK. Unflappable criminal mastermind. 8/10 #TolsWatches
47. #HouseOfTheDragon - Feel like they’re teasing us a little too much with this spinoff now. One more episode of Daemon having hallucinations & I would’ve written a complaint to George R. R. Martin himself. Moments of brilliance overshadowed by too much filler. 7/10 #TolsWatches
48. #Sprint - One of the best sports docs I’ve ever watched. Elite soundtrack, now my gym playlist. Even better watching it during the Olympics just before key races of many of the interviewees. The perfect anticipation builder. Star of the show? Noah Lyles . 10/10 #TolsWatches
49. #TooHotToHandle S6 - I thought all the newbies were all a bit lame at first. How can lust drive you that badly?? Some were still lame by the end, but most were not. Loved the authentic journeys with themselves they went through & reclaiming their self worth. 8/10 #TolsWatches
50. #AbbottElementary S3 - A continuation of elite comedy. Highlights: the PALPABLE sexual tension between Janine & Gregory, Jacob still trying too hard , Barb’s church frenemies, and Janine’s stint at the district putting her eternal optimism to good use. 12/10 #TolsWatches
